Charlotte, Mecklenburg, Lunenburg and Brunswick Counties

 

 South Central Fair celebrates it's 100th Anniversary

 

  • The 100th annual South Central Fair kicks off on Sunday, October 10, 2-5pm at the Autumn Jubilee, Chase City's Annual Street Festival, with an information booth where you can see some fair history and get prizes for the children.

 

  •  
    At 6pm a parade will start at the stoplight on main street ending at the gates to the fairgrounds with some special presentations and a ribbon cutting ceremony.

 

 

  • Tuesday night at 10:30pm there will be a Fireworks Show at the fairgrounds.

 

  • Wednesday Percy Sledge will perform at the fair grandstand 7pm 

 

  • Thursday Roy C will perform at the fair grandstand 7pm

 Interesting Fair Facts:

 

 

  • The County Fair began in the early 1900’s when area farmers in Mecklenburg County gathered to determine who had “bragging rights” to the largest livestock, and home-grown vegetables.

 

  • The Miss South Central Fair Pageant began in 1958 and has produced two state winters and two first runner-ups to that title.
     
  • While horse racing was legal, it was the main event at the fair.

    • During the early years  The event would kick off on Tuesday with a large parade down Main Street Chase City. Schools closed so students could participate and many state politicians were on hand for the opening of the fair.
    •  In 1919, Governor Westmoreland Davis spoke on the opening day with Congressman Watkins M. Abbott.
